Read out error memory

Today I was allowed to read out a friendly one around my fault memory.The first thing that was like so many times written here is the opening of the bonnet, which is actually not necessary for reading out, but the mechanic wanted to see the engine first.Well, I opened it to him.The comment from him:but he was far before my time on which I told him :that you are probably right.
I then told him that the memory is read out from the passenger side of the footroom, but he didn't believe me at first what he first brought his colleague to help, who first looked for driver side under the steering wheel and found nothing.Ok, the 2 mechanic then believed me and found the plugs there.
Plug in plug, I believe VAG 1551 and that says:No connection to the control unit, a few times tried, nothing.
She got another device to read out via Blinkcode , first the 3 times,the evaluation after which it worked:4 times the 4,means somehow: there is no error in the memory.For this reading I didn't have to pay anything.So, now you're up.
Is this correct if the flash code shows a 4 that the memory is empty?
Has the event.someone from the Ruhr area a laptop with software for the OBD1, which can read my fat guy.
